Eddie Mae Towles(click on photo to enlarge)Graveside services for Eddie Mae Towles, 90, of Longview, Texas will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 17, 2020 with Rev. Leroy Richardson officiating at Rosewood Park Cemetery in Longview. Arrangements are under the direction of Victory Funeral Services.Eddie Mae was born on March 3, 1930 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas the youngest of four daughters to the parentage of Edward and Willie Washington Thomas and departed this life on Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at Christus Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, Texas.In her youth, she united with and was baptized at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Arkansas City, Kansas where she was a noted singer in the Young Matrons. Upon relocating to Longview, Texas in 1999 she began attending Galilee Baptist Church.Her early education was garnered in the public schools of Ft. Smith culminating with graduation in the Arkansas City High School Class of 1947. Later in 1969, she received her associate’s degree from Cowley County Community College and ultimately graduated with her Bachelors of Science from Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas in 1972. Being one always seeking to improve, she also garnered certification as an in service psychiatric aide in 1959 from the State of Kansas Department of Social work and developed a social work field practicum program for Southwestern College. In 1988 she became a mental health tech.After leaving college, she led a fulfilling career in social work, mental health and occupational therapy, working with disabled patients. She completed her working days as a Social Worker II nursing home inspector. With her life’s work in social services completed she was free to pursue her love of literature.Eddie Mae was very talented and was always attempting different paths. She loved to read and the more she matured she found pleasure in consulting books and finding answers. Her love of prose and poetry led to having her poem, “What Life is to Me”, published in a book from the National Library of Poetry in 1997.She took great pride in actively and diligently working in both campaigns to elect and re-elect President Barack Obama.In 1948, she married Charles Edward Towles, Sr. and three children were born to the union.Her parents, husband, sisters, Beatrice Guesby, Eartha Thompson and Marie Edwards, brother, Harry Thomas and an infant brother all preceded her in death.Left to cherish her memories are her children, Charles Edward Towles, Jr. of LaMarque, TX; Teresa Towles-Penn and her husband James of Wichita, KS; and Eddie Steven Towles and his wife, Patti of Longview, TX; grandchildren, Russell Towles of Texas City, TX; Brandy Hypolit-Kirby of Houston, TX; Tricia Dewberry and Curtis Dewberry both of Wichita, KS; Lonzell "Zey" Johnson, Jr. of Gladewater, TX; Ronderick Johnson of Arlington, TX; Scott Dewberry, Ancio Towles, Christian Johnson, and Cory Johnson all of Longview, TX; and Taylor Towles of Denver, CO; and a host of other family and friends. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic social distancing and masks are required at the service. There will be no public viewing.
