services for Guy Columbus Melton, Jr., 93, of Kilgore, will be held at 11:00 a.m.,
Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Donald Daniels
officiating. Burial will follow at New Hope
Cemetery in Kilgore, Texas.
Arrangements are under the direction of Victory Funeral Services. Guy
Columbus Melton was born October 12, 1919 to Guy Melton, Sr. and Mattie
Giddings Melton in Franklin County near Calvert,
Texas. He departed this life on March
18, 2013 at Gregg Home for the Aged in Kilgore, Texas. In
his youth he united with and was baptized at Shiloh
Primitive Baptist
Church in Calvert,
Texas and later united with Second Baptist
Church in Waco, Texas. He attended elementary
schools at Giddings Chapel, Evergreen and Bethlehem
and graduated from Calvert High School in Calvert,
Texas. He graduated from Bishop College
in Marshall, Texas where he majored in Religion. His
master’s degree in education was garnered at Prairie
View A&M
College in Hempstead, Texas.
He taught in the public schools system at North
Chapel High
School in Kilgore and in the public schools of Palestine, Texas.
He served as a pastor for many years. Among the churches he led as pastor are:
New Hope Baptist in Kilgore; New Zion in Jacksonville, TX; New Hope Baptist in
Daingerfield, TX; Sweet Union Baptist in Jacksonville; New Hope Baptist in
Jacksonville; St. John Baptist in Kilgore; Canaan Baptist in Marshall, TX; Zion
Hill Baptist in Tatum, TX; Jerusalem Baptist in Palestine, TX; Shady Grove
Baptist in Diana, TX and many more.
Upon his move to East Texas he married Marian
Settle in 1946 and two children, Wayland and Guy, III, were born to this union. He
is preceded in death by parents, son, Wayland Edward Melton, brother, Giles
Dewey Melton and sisters, Earline, Earnestine, Henry Mae, and Mildred. Those
that remain to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Marian Melton of
Kilgore; a son, Guy C. Melton, III of Grand Prairie, TX; ten grandchildren,
Matt Melton of Los Angeles, CA; Zeb Melton and Dorcas Melton both of Grand
Prairie, TX; Joel and wife Ashley Melton of Lewisville, TX; Jennifer Melton of
Irving, TX; Timothy Melton of Arlington, TX; James Melton, Antonio Melton and
Lesley Allen all of Cincinnati, OH; and Tricia Melton of Knoxville, TN and a
host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Public viewing
will be Tuesday, March 19, 2013, starting at noon until 5 p.m. at Victory
Funeral Services.
